1. Speaking botanically Tomatoes are fruits! They are not vegetables.
2. They are world’s most popular fruit. With annual production of 60 million tons, they remain the world’s most demanded and most popular fruit.
3. There are many different colors of Tomatoes. There are white, black, purple, pink and yellow ripe tomatoes.
4. The largest tomato plant spans an area of 56.73 square meters, which is bigger than an Olympic swimming pool. The plant was found in Walt Disney Wold Resort in Florida.
5. The have an annual festival in Spain called La Tomatina. They throw tomatoes at each other. They use about 150,000 tomatoes.
6. As of 2019 the heaviest tomato weighed 9lbs 10.4oz. It was grown by Steve and Jeanne Marley (both USA), It was started by seed mid-May and harvested on September 20, 2019.
7. There are 10,000+ tomato varieties in the world.
8. Can you believe the state of Ohio has labeled tomato juice as their 'State Drink!' Ohio has also declared the Tomato as their State Fruit!
9. Many people consider tomato as a vegetable. The state of New Jersey in USA has actually made tomato as its ‘State Vegetable’.
10. Why is there so much confusion between the idea of the tomato being a fruit or vegetable? Well the confusion came when the USA Supreme Court declared tomatoes were vegetables for the purpose of taxation.
11. NASA left 12.5 million tomato seeds in space and they recollected them after 6 years. The seeds were given to school children for growing. The space-exposed seeds grew just as good as the earth-bound counterparts. Crazy right!
